I have just purchased a new set of XTR 950 hubs and I'd like an 8 speed lightweight cassette. Do you have any suggestions for what's the lightest and best?
M950 8 speeds were a combination of alloy and ti so would be nice and light. There were some full ti cassettes from tioga and others. Xt m737 and m739 of the era were also nice, alloy carrier with chromed alloy cogs. I'm sure there were others, m900 was 8 speed too.
None of the above are Aluminium cogs,
M900 the original 8sp on a spider, M737 the same but with an 11 tooth cog, there's not to fall apart like the early M900s
M950 is still cogged version of the later M900.
That's your choice reply.
If you move to 9sp for a late 90s early 00s bike... Or just don't mind, then XT above or similar SRAM top end.
You can of course use lower lever but you may start to damage the Ti free hub (iirc m950 had them).
There are Ti and Alu cassettes but 'ard to find and probably not worth it.
Saying thatso are m900/737/950. 950 being the lighter of the 3 for the same size
