What's happened to all the "stuff"

I understand what you're saying; but I've never seen bikes as cheap as they are now. Nice bikes.

Tap a chi-chi bike into the search bar, scroll back a few years and look at the prices.

Wicked Fat for £395,
1984 Stumpjumper for £225.

Lots more examples for anyone bored enough to look.

Just remember to time 2008 prices by ~1.65 and 2010 prices by ~1.55 to get equivalent today's prices.
As buying something for £40 now would have been the same as buying something for £25 back then. No profit/no loss.

Prices haven’t really changed over 15 years or so for the things I like - from what I’ve seen at least, though I like old British steel bargains 🤣 - basically there’s still plenty about if you’re patient.

For example there were 3 Dave Yates Diablos on the bay last week. One of them went for £150 or so.

Also I might be a bit of an exception on this site - always one bike in, one out for me. Daily rider notwithstanding.

The website, i.e "Retro bike", should make a forum post, that encompasses all bike parts, so 1 enormous thread that people can post into to supply a used part, it would save the effort of creating new threads etc and encourage photographers of used parts to photo and sell more, and thus recycle

From my perspective there are definitely less items for sale; be it full bikes or decent quality parts.

Ebay prices for the top end XTR stuff have gone through the roof; I regularly see cassettes for £250; cranksets for £400 etc. There are the same amount of loads of low quality parts. There aren’t many parts at high quality at decent prices. I think eBay’s research feature gives people the chance to list things at top end prices.

There used to be a regular decent bikes out there (gumtree, ebay) that could be broken down or sold and now they are getting rarer and rarer. I hardly see any these days.

People are definitely spending less on bikes due to the economy and obviously at this time of year people have one eye on Xmas and disposable income is low.

Like others have said ; I keep an eye on the wanted adds so if you really want something then that’s a good place to start.

Something I’d agree with is getting full XTR group sets at affordable prices is now trickier than ever.

So… this clearly calls for preconditioning the post-apocalypse!

Make it functional! Mix and match! Get creative, let the NOS garage Queen go, it can make its own way to cracked Onza porcupine Valhalla / ebay!
