As others have already said, you can get a lot more bike for your money buying secondhand. It doesn't have to mean its old, or in need of money spending on it. If you look around and find a bike that's hardly been ridden, has had upgrades and been lovingly maintained you will feel better about it, instead of buying new, still having to spend on it and wishing for upgrades but can't afford it. And remember what else was said - It is only new for 1 ride!!

I totally get what the OP means by wanting new. There is definitely something nice about buying a bike from a great LBS and it being perfectly set up with no creaks, ticks, rubs or clicks - and therefore no tweaks needed.

A secondhand bike can drive you mad trying to isolate and fix a minor problem like that.

But as others say, you can get a hellva lot more bike for your money second hand. My current steed came with titanium frame & forks, Mavic Crossland wheels, carbon seatpost and Deore LX throughout for £400.
