What would be the best gear ratio xc 15t?

Planning on converting to single speed. 15t cog what size chainring would be ideal for all terrain?
thanks for all comments.

But to use a 30T chainring you'd have to fit it in the granny ring position (if you're converting your old crankset), which might give you chainline problems.

My suggestion would be to fit a 32T chainring (in the middle ring position) and then play about with the sprockets to give you the ratio you need.
You might get away with 32:15 but it's a bit high for proper off-road use in my opinion. It all depends on the sort of riding you want to do, how strong you are, your weight, how well you can spin etc .......and whether you're prepared to sometimes pick the thing up and carry it.

If you aren't bothered about spinning out at about 16mph then 32:18 is a good usable ratio.

In my limited experience, with s/s it does really depend on the terrain you're planning to tackle and as stated your fitness level... my not-very-light s/s is currently running 38/18 (55") for XC use, which does mean I run out of steam at anything over about 15mph (ie most flat and all downhill), but I can get up most climbs.

Incidentally, I think about 70" is best for general use on flat surfaces and roads (somewhere between 42 or 44 chainring with a 16t cog - or 48/18 )... what do you lot reckon / use?

38:18 is a BIG gear for off-road use, you must be a lot stronger than me yessir, 32:16 is as big as I would like to go and 32:18 is probably the most useful compromise for me.

haha, not at all - it's probably just a lot flatter round my way - I only use my s/s for short (under 15k) burns after work and stuff, I take a geared bike on anything longer than that!!

I run 32/17 or 16. Where I ride it's not big hills (short sharp is more the thing) and completely non-technical. It's good for 30 milers. Personally I ride rigid as you do spend a lot of time climbing out of the saddle unless you have legs like tree trunks.

Personally I'd try whatever you have to hand, something like 16-18 usually after 3 months or so you will consider a smaller cog as you get stronger. :D

At the end of it you realise that you can make a crazy light bike with ordinary bits - my Alu Cindecone singlespeed weighs somewhere around 21lb.

I just hope that you don't live in the peaks!
