What works best; FD-M950 or FD-M953?

Ah, got it now. Go for conventional if it'll fit. The non-conventional ones ( you've mis-named them by the way; they're actually the ones called "top swings " ) were a design compromise to fit complex full suspension designs that diddled with the traditional seat tube.

Think you mean the M950-type generally with the extra pivots on the cage.

These are IMHO the best front mechs ever made. Only reason they stopped making them was because they were too expensive to produce.

Am running 3 of them at the moment (RC200 (Direct mount), RC300 and Parkpre) and they are just awesome.

Shhhhh

( desperately trying not to sound like a pedant.....and failing )

No they were actually called " top swings " as the parallelogram mechanism was above the pivot.
