What type BB do I need for this - New problem!

Hi,

Has anybody seen bottom bracket shells like this before? Not seen one myself. What type of BB am I looking for? It's an old Sun Snipe, not sure of year, guessing late 60's early 70's. This is just the drive side, other side is completely open as normal.

That cup should screw out

Ah, now - there's a thought. Never even thought it might be removable, will try it tomorrow.

Is it supposed to go back on over the bb though, if not, what's it for?
Is that a stupid question?

Re: What type BB do I need for this?

Looks like a Raleigh type. The cup on my MK3 Moulton looked exactly like that one. If it is a Raleigh, the threads will be different.

I got a set of stilsons on mine and out it came with not a lot of fuss!

Re:

Yes it looks like a Raleigh type to me, but before you get too heavy handed with it, check which direction to turn it.
My four British bikes (1953-1988) are all CLOCKWISE to UNSCREW the DRIVE side bb cup.

Why do you need to remove it? Have you not got the rest of the BB? If it's 26tpi you might struggle to find a replacement.

A removal method that hasn't failed me yet, is to use an M16 bolt, nut and a star washer. I put the bolt through from the inside, and use a socket to hold it. Then tighten the nut and washer down from the outside using a spanner, then keep turning the spanner (clockwise) to extract the assembly complete. If it won't budge, give the spanner a whack with a hammer to crack it off. If the bolt slips in the cup, try a star washer under the bolt head as well as under the nut. If none of this shifts it, you will probably need to use heat, or weld the bolt to the cup, but then it is wrecked.

Re:

ideally, it should have been removed prior to repainting the frame. If you now remove it, you run risk the risk of "breaking" the paint around it much like an eggshell.

No I haven't got rest of BB. So, I'm going to have to try and remove it, hopefully it isn't too much of an issue, but will heed advice above.

HOWEVER, can anybody tell me what type of BB replacement I should be looking for to fit the remaining shell??

Re: What type BB do I need for this?

Run a sharp blade round the edge of the cup and the BB shell to break the paint.
