What to do??

In an ideal world, I would fix it up, finish the rustproofing and say here you go mate, good for another 15 years (at no extra cost because I like the old guy). But I'm knackered and already doing 80-90 hours a week trying to cope with the work I have already got.

I know this guy will be gutted when he finds out what a state the car is in.

So not really a moral dillema at all. It's a case of do I play the good guy and bust a gut to sort it out or do I just walk away from it and ruin his day?

You sound to me like you want to do it with that statment, and your looking for an excuse not to i think on the basis that you like the guy and sound like you would feel bad if you didnt do it, i would do it and send the old guy on his way a happy man and you not feeling like you let him down.

Make sure you let the old guy know what you done for him enjoy the pizza sounds like your going to deserve it and enjoy a beer when work is done, dont imagine many people would do the same

I would have told him the facts and let him decide the cars fate (after you give him an estimate for the work)

Si, there are times to think of others & times to think of yourself & those you love.

This time, even though the guy sounds like a nice bloke, is a time to think of yourself, we all have to do this every so often even though at the time it does not seem like the correct decision in the long run it often turns out to be the better option before you burn yourself out

You have to tell him the entire situation, the issues with the car as well as the extra time it will take to sort it properly & that you cannot complete the work in the allotted timeslot you quoted.

Once he has the info it's then his decision as to what to do next, you're second guessing him by wanting to do the work properly, he might once told of the situation say OK, fair enough it's knackered & you won't have the work to do, he might say carry on.

Life is for living, not working yourself into the ground Si. I know you take great pride in doing a very professional job in everything you do, but for once, know when to call it a day & go play with your kids, there will be plenty of other customers, but you only have one family to spend your time with

Put a car with known faults through the main dealers and if they pass it it get the Ministry in to sort them out.

I also agree with a lot of the people on here Dr S, he should really be told about the car (i guess it will be after you;ve done the work now) but definitely nees to be told.
