What to do in Houston?

I have a whole weekend (and 4th July) to myself in Houston Texas and wondered if there are any good bike shops or similar I should look out for?

Failing that anything I must see / do before I leave?, I've heard Galveston and the space centre is worth a visit.

There's quite a good bike shop just down the road in Austin :)
And the bar/music scene there is pretty good.

Galveston is pretty quaint - and I think you pass by NASA on the way.
I seem to recall Sunday lunch, after a Mardi Gras weekend at Galveston, at the Hooters near NASA. Mmmm - spicy wings :)

Spent a morning at a shooting range - firing a 9mm, Magnum & M16

But mostly spent my time riding the roads off to the NorthWest of the Houston :)

I used to live there. There is an excellent bike shop called West End Bikes (Rice Military neighbourhood) that has a good collection of old mountain bikes (not for sale). I believe you can rent mtn bikes there and a few minutes away (by bike) is Memorial park that has some fun albeit short singletrack trails to ride. These are located on the south side of Memorial drive. If its hot and humid try to ride early AM or late PM. Bring water and mosquito repellent.

MUST eat Goode BBQ and get yourself a burger at Fuddruckers.

NASA is ok, its not to far from Houston, if you've never been its worth the drive. Galveston is boring IMO, but then again you may enjoy it.

Bring a sweatshirt, those Texans crank the AC down so cold you'll be shivering your butt off when indoors

PM if you have any specific questions. Enjoy!

Good call on that speedo. I had a fairly modest 1/2 pound burger and it was massive. Sadly the Richmond had run our of Old Speckled Hen though.

Carge I wanted to ask where you went shooting?

Richmond Arms Pub? I used to drink there too! I sort of miss Houston...but not that much.

Uno; Dropped into West-End bikes today, good shout. Pretty awesome.
It's partly a retrobike museum with about 60+ old bikes lined up, hung up and stuffed in every corner, as well as a busy bike shop.

I spoke to the owner of the store 'Daniel' Very nice chap, he is an endless resource on stories of the early days and early bikes. His store was really busy but you could see he loved telling the tales. He probably knows enough to write a book.

Most of his retrobikes are A1 unridden condition, pretty awesome to see, museum pieces in my mind. In-fact I suggested he had enough to set up a museum of bikes as you can chart the evolution of bike development since the 40/50's with the collection.

He was nice enough to show me the junk he had out the back, (his words lol) loads of other British and American bikes he has from the 50's.

Just sad that I had to walk away empty handed. :-(
