What size BB

Bearing surfaces worn so need a new one.

Ita an old Tange, JIS square taper, standard 86mm, but I can't decide on the overall lenth. wWithout the ue of calipers, (which I haven't got as I'm Billy-no-mates as far as bikers are concerned), its either 122mm, 122 1/2mm or 123mm. So is 1mm critical if I get it wrong and is it better to go a mm over than under.

And I suppose the new sealed type would be a lot better.

What chainset are you using it on? There's some lists of suitable chainset/axle combinations here -

Essentially 1 or 2 mm is nothing. Shimano ones are probably the easiest to source: a UN54 or (if you can find one) UN72/73 are the simplest choice.
