After reading all the above posts. I went on Ebay to checkout UN55 b/b, they are being listed as road b/b. Looks as if they are the same quality, 54 is mtb and 55 the road version.

No (well everything I've read said it replaced it, UN55 has just replaced the UN54 this year)
Both are Road/MTB/whatever and available in all three usual shells and 107 to ...
If it was road it would go lower than 107

All I can see at the moment is the loose cup is metal again and not the plastic one.
No idea about internals

I've asked Shimano on facebook. waiting to see them as why the hell would I want to know about some old tech stuff

Yes I see what your saying, metal replacing plastic on no drive cup on 55. Also some listing’s on 54 state mtb/road also. If you could keep us all updated on reply from Shimano, as in the market for a 115/73 and the 55(metal non drive cup as un72) could be the way forward for me

Shimano Cycling : BB-UN55 went to an aluminum left side cup as opposed to the resin cup on the BB-UN54.
