What length Octalink BB Axle With m951 Cranks

Yes, i'm aware theyre like rocking horse with hens teeth in it!! Ill have to settle in for a long wait and/or pay through the nose for US or Japan shipping prices. Oh the price of going retro... How much are those modern Boardman things in the shop, again?????

The bike is in Stratford upon Avon. I've got a complete XTR group (minus the BB) and a pair of HED carbon rims to put on it. Its going to be a belter and I couldn't live with myself if it didn't run anything but perfectly.

Thought if you were local you could try mine, long shot! Has occurred to me that being Octa it should be possible to measure the width of the chainstays and the amount of inset to the crank arm. Will take some fiddling but it should be possible.

If you've got clearance for a 109mm then Dura Ace 7700 and Ultegra come up regularly for reasonable money.

The problem I had with 109 was less to do with chainstays (plenty of clearance on '99 zaskar), but more to do with the amount of clearance between the bb cup and the crank arms at the bolt point. Fully torqued bolts on a 109 axle pulls the tapered part of the crank arm that houses the bb interface right into the cup, and there must be <1mm between metal and metal!

This is largely due to not being able to find a correct V1 BB for m951 cranks and not being sure which axle length to use.
Can you carefully measure what you already have to get an idea what you need for the m951 cranks?

Looks like Octalink v1 BB's can still be found for not huge amounts of $$.
Here's a v1 Octalink 105 BB below found 109.5mm + 118.5mm axle with 68mm shell.

As long as it is sealed bearings then it should last quite well. I had a M950 BB that was rubbish compared to the M952 sealed jobbie.

With that in mind can anyone recommend which BB to use on a Pace RC200 F4 68mm shell 27 speed with m951 XTR Cranks?

Is this one anything like yours? (if so, very schwanky BTW)

Maybe PM robadub and check what size BB was used?
It might be pretty close :|

That's an F6 so we have the tech docs for that. It recommends the shortest bb for each crank which would be the 112.5 of course.
But specifies 4 to 5mm for crankarm clearance and 1mm main for chainrings.

112mm NOS if you're prepared to pay for it...

Cheapest one i've seen so far - after import duties and shipping. The highest was $299 for NOS on ebay.com

Sure, I could just get a 109/118mm Shimmy 105 job and make it work but I know, if I fitted it, it would never be 100% and because its there I would probably never change it for the correct one.

After all, holding out and searching for the right parts is half the joy of this retro bag, isn't it?
