What length BB spindle?

Just a quick question, i am looking to fit an open cup bottom bracket, i have the bracket size of 68mm, and the threading of 1.37x24tpi...What i need to know is, i have heard that the length of the spindle is the criticle measurement, i am assuming down to whether you have single double or triple chainset.......I plan to run a 6 speed with single chain ring, hubs are 120, but i have no idea what length spindle i will need or how to obtain the info........many thanks

Depends very much on the type of chainset as well as how many rings it has; modern "low profile" chainsets (e.g. Campag Veloce, to pick a random example) use shorter spindles than the more traditional-looking ones (e.g. TA Cyclotouriste) from years gone by. If you know what make your cranks are, that will help give a better idea. Incidentally, modern track chainsets such as Miche Primato for single-ring work tend to use 107mm spindles or thereabouts.

ok, thanks for info, just so i have got it right, and please excuse my ignorance....i need to determine the chain set first, once i have this i can then get the spindle length once i have the correct chain line.....also are there any advantages or disadvantages by going with an open cup bottom bracket?

Sounds about right to me. If you're buying new or if the chainset is used but comes with some sort of original packaging or fitting instructions, should be easy enough to find out the recommended spindle length. For derailleur systems that should pretty much be it as chain line needs to have some flexibility built in anyway. For a single-speed, a bit of extra homework might be needed.

As is often the way, some useful stuff from Sheldon Brown too:
