Dunno about bees, but queen wasps and hornets certainly do when on the lookout for new nesting sites.

Yes, the queens of this particular variety come out in May, and search for burrows to build nests..
 
Yep, red tailed bumblebee. Cute and useful animal. There are few species of bumblebees, some in honeybee size, some really big.
Not sure how big is this one, seen plenty of them where I've used to live. They were about same big as hornets are.
You would hear bumblebees buzz from few hundreds yards :lol: Haven't seen any in Glasgow though :(
You've been lucky to see queen perhaps, rare thing it is.
 
We are on a flight path for bumble bees, whenever we leave the door open in the evening we get a few coming in and need guiding out again, when the door is shut they reach it and fly up and over our house, I have seen those occasionally but most of ours are the white and yellow striped variety. the poor things are getting quite rare now...
