What is (sic) ?

sylus

Old School Grand Master
Being a truly retro person I do not have twitter of facebook :D so it might explain why this (sic) puzzles me. what is it? an example of where I see it

'Jeremy clarkson (sic) has summed up what will go wrong this summer. GO JEREMY! He is brilliant.'

User Waqar Ahmed said: 'The BBC should sack Clarkson just too many slip ups from a nasty piece of work!!' (sic).

Now ignoring the fact it's a clarkson story I am puzzled by the additional sic bit as I've seen it on many other stories where people comment then on them

is it a term by the twaterati or another silly made up thing?

sic/sik/
Adverb:
Used in brackets after a copied or quoted word that appears odd or erroneous to show that the word is quoted exactly as it stands in the...
Verb:
Set a dog or other animal on (someone or something).

In the first quote there should be capitals for his name and the (sic) indicates that the quote is correct despite the error..

if that makes sense :)

from the latin sicuit....meaning "just that"

I hate the use of "sic". It's just a form of one-upmanship showing that the writer is aware that the person being quoted has made a mistake and wants the reader to know it. Its use may be correct, but I don't see why it should be used when following a direct quote, except in certain academic or legalistic contexts.

Winkers!! (sic)
