I've seen John's Corsa Extra and jonnyboy's Gan replica but interested in thoughts on what other frames would suit a Mavic groupset.

famous french to me= vitus , gitane ,peugeot ,look and tvt but also lemond, bottechia and even lotus carbon ?I must say i love the look of starfish cranks and would use then on anything.

My Zap will go on a Vitus FCK9. The mechanical group will go very well with similar French or some really fine steel. Italian would not be 1st thought, but what to think of American? A Serotta for example? In Gallery 2 you find a review of a Slim Chance with Mavic.

I'm building up a 1980s Urago 531 with a load of Mavic parts (derailleurs and levers, calipers and levers, bars, stem, wheels, crankset) I've bought from a collector near me. He had lots of bits and I'm not 100% sure it's an original complete groupset, but it might be. I'm trying to research it at the moment from scanned brochures etc. on the Internet. I'm working far from home though and it will have to wait until I get home. I'll post photos then.

I reckon any French frame is a good choice for "tout Mavic".

I've seen it look pretty good on Cannondales before now.

I have most of one on my Alan cross bike - exactly to avoid the Campag cliché but I know it's not really de rigeur. But I figured that if it looks good on a Vitus, it can't look that bad on an Alan and I think it's great.

For my 80s "tout Mavic" build(when I have all the parts) I will, however be shunning Italian frames. I think it'd be great on a French, Dutch, Belgian or UK steel frame. US is too "boutique" for my conservative tastes.

Hi Ed :-) Try a Turbo Mecacycle if you can get your hands on 1. I love mine and its not even on the road yet. I rode it a few times before stripping it down. 1 seriously under-rated bike to ride ... if you like it tight that is. Tight & Tucked ..... then it's all legs after that, even when you're tired, Meca's make you want to keep going.

Very nice bikes.

Later buddy, yours Laz.
