What do you keep?

Nothin-fancy

Devout Dirtbag
I was just perusing the Shed Thread and it got me thinking about what I/other's keep when it comes to cycling. In the rest of my life I'm very orderly and alphabetical. My records are all alphabetical and my books are by type and alphabetized. If I don't use something other than tool's, books or records for more than 6 months I'm generally good at donating it or giving to a friend or houseless person. My beer memorabilia is all by type and size etc. Other than the shared spaces with the ADHD girlfriend where her piles engulf and swallow my organization, I'm really good about neat and orderly.

But damn if I can do it with bicycle stuff. My parts are a jumble and I'm trying to pair everything down to just the bikes I ride and the parts to keep them going. And I'm still keeping mid tier freewheel wheel sets I'll never use, frames that don't fit/don't like how they ride or old Campy stuff when I will always use a slant parallelogram derailleur and don't collect old bikes anymore Or I keep old rear derailleur cables because I can use them again on front derailleurs, bolts galore that I've forgotten what they went to, canti brake straddle cable holder's when I've switched to the Shimano one's because of convenience. Or how many Shimano Lx canti's do I need? It's not like they break... It's a bit disconcerting...

Anyone else have this problem? And most importantly, does your significant other approve or disapprove? 🧐

Completely normal behaviour.

I’ve had a big thrift recently. If I don’t need it or it’s not shiny and special then it’s gone.

I’ve kept what I need, not what I like. It was hard.

If you cant see yourself using it....sell it...enjoy the cash.

Or use it to buy other parts 😂

I wish I could. I don't do eBay anymore because of bad selling and buying experiences. And I live in a place that doesn't really do vintage bikes. If it's not a $5000plus used gee whiz golly it goes to 13 speeds carbon fiber bike to go with the 55 year old beer belly or completely unridden hung in a climate controlled cryo chamber with original tubes and tires that hold air vintage unobtanium bike by a big known name that was built by a outside contract builder, it just doesn't sell. I'd try selling here for reasonable prices just to get it in hands that'll appreciate it but I'm in the USA and because of certain actions by people I didn't want, I'm not even sure if I can send things to the EU or UK or vice versa or if it's okay today what if a whim changes while it's in transit...
And I don't do bikeforums other than finding info because of trolls, infighting etc.

There's also a thrift/junk shop nearby that gets a lot of vintage bikes and because the shop isn't big they price them really cheap just to make room for other things. So it's real easy to justify buying a bike for just one part or just to find out how it ride's or what if my short/tall friend comes to visit and wants to ride bikes to the bar/creek I should probably have this cool bike for them to ride...

So the purge is hard... Or so I keep telling myself 😂 😂 😂

Just need more space. 😃

It probably sounds weird (but then i am 🤪) i started with the smaller bits. I used to get obsessed with building bikes around a certain part like a stem, thumbies or deerhead parts or even a brooks saddle.

We are all at different stages of the journey 😀
