What do we think this is?

I just bought this for my mate for commuting & light touring - only £80 but what do we think it is?

Components are a mix of campag, stronglight & Shimano with Mavic Open wheels. Its been powder coated and the only decal is a 531 sticker.

It'd be good to tell him what he's riding. Cheers.

Thanks for your replies. Always good to get a good deal, and especially so for my mate who's been shielding for his son for what seems like an eternity.

As I've said before, my knowledge of road bikes is poor - were do the signs point on this one.

Obviously a tourer. Due to the law of averages I'm assuming it's one of the bigger producers, but from what I've looked at it doesn't seem to be Dawes, Raleigh or CB.

What features on the bike are pointing in what direction?

The fork crown is interesting, whilst the powder coat is thick it still looks like a neatly built frame.

I reckon it's a (British Eagle) Touristique.

If so, then it's an absolute steal. They are as good as eg Dawes Galaxy, some would say better, but often fly under the radar these days. A guy I know was given one of these last year - claims it was found in a skip.

No, sorry, the touristique never used the cast seat clamp and ran a different fork crown (assuming the forks are original to the frame) plus the rear stays were finished scalloped rather than flat.

I am thinking along the lines of an Orbit Silver Medal - although they have the same fork crown, the stays are nicely pointed.

I had a brief closer look at it this morning - no serial number visible, 735 (angle I think) on seat lug, a Raleigh bb cable guide and Sugino seat clamp bolt.

Well worth it for eighty quid, if it stayed local could be an M Steel. Could be any builder though.

Frame alone is worth the £80, you did well there

For the purists, the cable stops on the lever bosses are upside down, but leaving it as is won't make any difference to the gear shifting
