What causes play in free hub , sealed bearing hub?

Basically a guy on pinkbike has a hub that i want
150mm x 12mm cartridge bearing hub so no cones.
And he says it has a small amount of play in the free hub but bearings
are running smooth.
So it should not be the bearings , could it be the pawls of the whole free hub?
As pawls are cheap whole free hubs are not.

As i do not have it in my hand i can't check it out.

Help would be splendid

It will be the bearings in the freehub body - these allow the body to rotate relative to the wheel when freewheeling. They are generally not replaceable (depending hugely on the freehub design).
