What Brakes will fit U brake Posts?

Hi everyone,
I've just bought a frame with rear U brake mounts and i was just wondering what is out there to fit them? It has an XT u brake fitted but i fancied something a bit fancier.... I know that some of the cunningham designed roller cam brakes will fit (suntour etc.), but any other ideas? Also if anyone know where to get a decent roller cam please let me know. Thanks Guys!

Magura HS 33's can be made to fit - with a bit of faffing :)

If the U brake mount centres are more than 90mm and/or the distance from the wheel spindle centre is more than 315mm you will probably run into the problems of getting the slave cylinders near enough to the rim and low enough to clear the tyre.

They work a lot better than any U brake though.... 8)

Sure will, I got mine off evilbay us, some nice ones out there by the name of fly too.

here

Good BMX U brakes include Fly bikes, Revenge Industries, Demolition (which I think have sealed bearings instead of bushings) and Odyssey evolver.
Alans BMX in Wigan will have most of them in stock.

The best thing is to point you to this thread, where someone (thanks Simon !) was kind enough to give me some insight into this.

I would say that provided that the U brake studs are not much over 90mm crs. and aren't fitted too high on the frame then it's no faffier a job than setting up any brake. The wider the rim the more you have to play with too.

The whole thing relies on the U brake studs being about the same distance above the braking surface of the rim as canti studs are below it. This is so the adaptor clamps can be fitted upside down - you'd need the "old" Evolution mountings (that have the little elbows that fit inside the frame) rather than the newer Evo 2 version .
Also U brake studs are 9mm dia. compared to the 8mm of canti studs so a little material has to be removed from the mounting slot - the U studs are also shorter so this may prevent the use of the quick release due to the hourglass bolt not being long enough (as in my case ).

However, once they are installed they do work very well - one finger is all I ever need to use to lock the wheel. They don't look as "bling" as some of the U brakes out there ( just being die-cast from "monkey metal") and the flouro yellow ones are BRIGHT until you get used to them 8)

Anyway - what I have them on is this old ( and much loved) Explosif and, in a way, they sort of suit it .....
