Thinking for the Explosif, want something as light as possible but not something that's silly money or going to be difficult to source easily....

I say 'retro' but it's not strictly a totally period build, and in reality I would like sealed bearings too :P

Any advice, could be that what I have on the karma Kona is actually the most suitable in terms of quality to pound ratio!!

Origional Mavic CrossMaxx:

Mavic Crossmax front 689g
Mavic Crossmax rear 876g

The rear tend to crack around eyelets and also bulge the rim out around the eyelets, so you'll be lucky to find a good set.

Re:

Try the original Mavic CrossRide wheels, the model below the CrossMax as they don't seem to have the rim cracking problem.

Mavic cross trails are nice with sealed bearings. The problem with older Mavic is you can't get free hubs easily, or so I was told when I had some.

I had some rolf dolomite or something ending in ite that were really good and light too, ceramic braking surfaces etc.

Re:

I've just built a wheel-set for my Axis TT:

White Industries hubs
Mavic 230 rims
DT rev spokes with alloy nipples

Front (suspension Tracker) = 688g
Rear (titanium free-hub) = 798g
Total = 1486g

Cheers :)

Re:

Hmm, thanks guys. Had some early Cross Max a while ago but let them go...

Looks as if I might have found something nice now, XT rear and a sealed bearing Coda front, goes with the 'Dale forks at least

Mavic 230 with Hope Lightweight front and M739 or M900 rear. However I always found 230s to be too fragile for my (admittedly clumsy) 10.5 stone.

For 'standard'/factory wheels, my vote is the 1st Gen Crossmaxes but they're hard to get hold of and don't normally come cheap (lucky enough to still have 2 very good pairs). A bit less sought after, I've had some Rolf Dolomites in the past (about 1725g for the wheelset), and some Rolf Vectors which I think were about 100g or so lighter again, with tubeless and ceramic coated rims.
