Weinmann gum brake hoods perished :(

OK, my restore project as described here: http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=153696

I had kept the handlebars, stem and levers together as the original leather/fake leather bar tape was still fitted and didn't want to change it, however when polishing the brake levers I found that the hoods have perished, they just split apart when trying to peel them back.

Are these available and easily replaceable without removing the levers (or can the levers come off without disturbing the tape?)

Is it possible to remove and refit bar tape, or is it best to replace once disturbed?

The levers are drilled weinmann, look quite nice I thought.

Final option, bite the bullet and replace the levers and tape and forget about trying to keep it original. i have a pair of new Acor aero levers i could fit which means replacing the tape anyway to get the cable underneath, and whilst I'm at it I could also fit a pair of cross lever to the top of the bars which would certainly make the bike more rideable for me, any thoughts?

i'll be watching this thread closely as i also need some hoods but pref shimano 600ex pre tri-color lol

as for replacing with newer. tough call.. and personally i wouldnt. tiz a nice looking period racer you have there and i think it would be a shame to lose that side of it....

good luck on your quest bud :)

I've tried removing bar tape for reuse, but it's pretty hard to remove padded vinyl or fake leather stuff in one piece if it's been stuck down to the bars. The foam tends to stay stuck to the bars.

However, I think Ambrosio bike ribbon bar tape is still available as NOS- they might even still make it. It seems to be pretty much period correct for 1980's bikes - it's certainly good enough for this chap:

Otherwise, there's fizik's microtex bar tape which gives quite a pleasing retro finish, I find.

Yes really not sure what to do with it now, suppose I could always keep the old levers in case I sell it on.
