Way back when you first tried spd's..

When I first started mountain biking around '97 I used flat pedals, progressed to things like bear traps and final flatties were a set of DMR V12'S,still got them in the spares bin

First forray into the spd world was with these Time ATAC Alium HP'S,great learning curve, always ended up in the bushes still connected to the bike or falling flat on my face at the traffic lights in town lol..springs just to tight or something..never got on with them, personal preference I guess, took them off after a couple of months...still got these in my parts bin too

Finally back then found spd's that were perfect for me and still use them today :D yup! Shimano PD-M747's.

What were your first and your experiances :?:

my first were the shimano 525? back in '92 (Had been using power grips till then) with shimano M051 shoes... Had been doing the whole clip in clip out all afternoon to practice, then went for a bit of ride... 3 lane 1 way road in town, I stopped for the traffic that was about arrive... couldn't clip out, eventually fell over in the lane, right in front of the oncomming traffic, er whoops

Some time later I discovered they cove quite tight drom factory, but by then I was used to them...

which reminds me, am currently running 959's, that are way too sloppy, have been for ages... I should go tighten them up, hahaha

I used SPDs the first time in 96, when I bought a new MTB which was allready eqipped with SPDs style pedals - and found it difficult to use

Shimano 737's. was the first kid on the block to get em at the turn of the decade and never looked back. By By toe clips..... To this day I feel naked on a bike if I am not clipped in.

Got some 525's in 91 or 92 and used them for about 6 months or so everyday, fell over in traffic on the first ride but was OK after that, but we never geled, so went back to flat pedals and toe clips for a while but then on to flatties and haven't looked back. They seem like the last relics of the roadie era that were put on a mountainbike and just wont die :).

This mirrors my own experiences. Everyone falls off 2 or 3 times but after that it should be fine. I still have that first set of 737 pedals which are still going strong. I am considering changing all my pedals to Time. This is fine on the road but I just don't know about the mountainbikes.

I would rather not ride than have to use flats.

Onza HO's, bought them on a shoe / pedal deal at Phil Corleys in MK. Had my first SPD moment at Chicksands the following morning.

My first foray in clipless, were look in about 1992, there was a discount shop for bike stuff, used ot be advertised in MBUK, and did boots and pedals on the cheap so bought a set, did get stuck in them and fall over at a local cycle club meeting, much to ever ones amusement. then a couple of hears away, then bought spd's and the very next day rode a 50 heart foundation ride route,, and since then never looked back.

Ahh the SPD. Still not sure if I prefer them or not, fantastic for bunny hops not so great for sitting on the bars and riding backwards. :? They absolutely will not release backwards - obvious design flaw by Shimano I think - and had to fall over , take my feet out of the shoes and use a big screwdriver to get them off !

Used Tioga pedals & toeclips (as did most of the MTB club I rode with) for ages, then in 92/93 I got some shimano 525's iirc and Look spd shoes.
I literally took to them like a duck to water and have used spd's ever since.
Only now (some 17 or so years later!) am I looking at putting flat pedals on one of my bikes, and that's only for some downhill shenanigins.
