Currently populating the boys' model railway with people (actually quite a bit of it was mine so a lot of the rolling stock is over 30 years old); bwhen I was young I didn't have much space N gauge was the way forward. Now I have to paint ridiculously small figures made out of lead. Not that long ago I painted a badger that must have been all of 4mm long
Lurking in a very unsquare wooden box, painted bright gloss green (made by my own fair hand in woodwork) at my dad's house is my wargames army. 15mm lead Naismith designed French Napoleonic army. Bought them at a wargames convention somewhere grim like Blackburn.
Must be worth a mint just in scrap metal value alone. Googling shows they still make them: £1.20 for 6 infantrymen - I've got hundreds!
Google has led to some further thoughts on this surreal trip down memory lane - books. "Charge, or how to play wargames", used to pour over this book when I was 11. It was ace. It's only £15 on Amazon... tempting! Then there were some books on napoleonic uniforms. Fabulously illustrated; again Hazel Grove library willingly lent them to me only for me to get Humbrol enamels on them.
There was a big wargames club at school; used to get home late have my tea on a fold up table in front of the telly. Always seems to be Butterflies on the telly.
Yes a few of us did go and discover D&D,AD&D, Traveller, and Tunnels and Trolls; but that bit is best glossed over
Sad? Probably... but I am tempted to create a British Napoleonic army just so I can educate the boys what life was like before the advent of Cossaks II and Age of Empires!
Or am I taking 'retro' too far?
