Very keen to build one of these up.

Would also love just hardrock, rockhopper or stumpjumper 21"+

What's going on with the front mech?

I am not sure - it's on it's way to me currently. I bought it online. What makes you say that?
(I am new to all of this)

The picture isn't at a high enough resolution to be absolutely clear but it looks like the front mech has been replaced at some point and the one that's on there looks to have three holes in it. It could be just a sticker, though. And again, it could be just that the photo isn't clear, but the outer plate of the front mech looks to be too high - too far away from the large chainring - as if it was bolted on too high on the seat tube. Anyway, you should be able to tell when you've got it: just Google how to install a front mech if you're not sure.

Ah yes I see what you mean. Just checked other photos and does indeed look like 3 holes and some way off the large chainring. That'll be the first job.
