W J Hood - The Palace

MallardBike

Retro Newbie
I own a bike built by W J Hood
Hood W. J. 32 Fulham pal. rd. Hammrsmth W6 (Bicycle makers from the 1919 Post Office London Location Suburbs Directory)
The bike is called "The Palace"

Does anyone know how I can estimate the age of the bike?
It has a frame number B3421

Thanks for any info

Hi Nigel

You must post some detail close up pictures, which are viewable on a picture hosting site.

Re:

Hi, I believe William J Hood were in business up to the early fifties, and this looks late 40's / early 50's but we do need better photo's. Terry

Re:

Obviously the cable guides are much later, probably when repainted.
This type of cast lug were probably left over from pre WW2 stock, but unlikely to be used after 1949/50.

Keith - are you referring to the lugs on the underside of the crank? These were on the bike when it was given to me circa 1970.
I believe the bike to be 50's or earlier?

Re:

Nigel, The cable guides are under the bottom bracket and would have been much later than the frame. The lugs are used to join the frame tubes, and are probably malleable cast iron, a type unlikely to be used for frame construction after about 1950. They mostly needed a lot of filing.
