hmm arent van engines vastly different in their torque curves? my tranny only has 85bhp but zipps along quite nicely.
Probably the same fundamental engine as in cars.

Torque curve with a modern, turbo-charged diesel is almost entirely down to how the turbo is electronically actuated.

I would have thought it's possible that vans and other commericals are "tuned" more for longevity than performance, given it's much more likely they'll rack up the miles compared with cars (as a generalism).

as far as the tuning/chipping goes the general research i did came up with the answer that they are set for the masses across different countries to meet a broad spectrum of limits and vw like others just tune/chip them for in the middle of all of them. so they know the engines can do more but it's easier for them to make 1 or 2 options per engine to suit the overall market.

but officially they don't like chipping. the best way it was described to me was this:-

25 years ago you'd fiddle with your carb, these days we get the laptop out!

it does seem to make sense! there were very few negative comments regarding chipping overall.

mmm I can point you in the direction of at least 6 people who have problems due to chipping on the 1.9 tdi lump, all of them in Galaxy's or Sharans! main problem is over heating while under load, carrying a full load or towing a plastic shed! all these vehicles were chipped by reputable companys!
another possible downside is the insurance! have you informed them of the chipping? and will the years warrenty cover any damage possibly causes by the chipping?[/i]

insurance will know about it, and the dealer has sold 36 of these vans 22 have been chipped with no issues and mine hasn't got a tow bar fitted so has never pulled anything and i won't be either. the most mine will carry is 4 people and 4 bikes, hardley a massive load unless i eat all the pies!!

basically for those who know it, the m27 going in the bournemouth/ringwood direction from southampton, the motorway turns into a dual carriage way after junction 1 and there is a relatively steep hill with no run up that my car slows on, especially if i have bikes/people in the car, the van slowed but not badly and that was keeping it in 5th all the way up when we hit it at 60mph.

So, it was YOU I was stuck behind was it!!
