VW T5 INFO NEEDED/BOUGHT IT!

@LGF yep defo got a turbo, this is standard now on those, the 130 bhp was only on the 2.5, the more powerful ones are the ones than bugger clutches etc.

felt nice to drive, no wobbles, creeks or moans. worst case is it's no slower than my car!

@kaiser, not gonna mod too much for a while, will do alloys at some point but sensible ones, want a good stereo and speakers, then the skid bar things on the side, then windows and one row of double seats, bulk head behind that then full carpet and insulation and sound proofing. all to be done over the next 6-8 months, it'll still be mostly standard at mayhem.

I know i'm a little late, firstly congratulation on your purchase, i've owned a split, bay, wedge and T4 except a T5 which i'm planning on getting at the end of the summer, all have been great. The only problem i know of is the flywheel braking on the 1.9 T5, out of the 5 i use for work 2 have had this problem and this has happened before 100,000 miles, we were told its something to do with the casting process? i'm no engineer so can't go any further on that, 4 of our vans are chipped to about 154bhp, as its a free for all every morning, and most mornings its the two Merc Vitos that are left in the car park . . . . nuff said, and yes the driving position on the vitos just ain't right!!

thanks for that link, i'll have a good rumage around their site later. as far as the clutch goes i've heard more issues with it on the more powerful vans, the general theme seems to be that the more pwerful engines are too powerful for the gearbox and clutch.

i just finished a ride with a friend this afternoon and stopped for a coke at the pub at the end of the ride, just as i sat down fred, the sales guy, phoned and gave me some more info on the van that he had checked for me, he said it had been serviced by breeze vw-audi in southampton since new and they knew the vehicle, they also pointed out that they do discount for servicing on these vans. i have to say fred has been very helpful and i really hope this van is reliable as i genuinely think he doesn't want to sell me a dodgy van as he knows that i'd be gutted if i ended up with a big bill coz it died for some reason!

wrongetty wrong - the power has nothing to do with the gearbox or clutch, its the dual mass fly wheel that can separate, regardless of engine.

Mines still holding together at 140,000 miles

Its the Skoda Fabia VRS owners who seemed to eat clutches.

"wrongetty wrong" that made me laugh! the info i found is from the vwt4/5 forum, but yes the flywheel thing seems to be potentially an issue aswel.

but hopefully i'll never find out.

Just a word on chipping/remapping and you may not like this but.... chipping although providing oodles more power and torque can give grief in spades.

update,

went to look at a van today, will be test driving tomorrow. it is the 1.9tdi 84 bhp, so less powerful by miles but the van centre i'm going to says they use a company to have the vans chipped so they have 110-115 bhp, this upgrade apparently gives better fuel economy and more power. what i never understand about chipping though is if it's that much better to have the engine mapped like that then why is it not done by VW?

when i ask this question the most common answer is a shrug of the shoulders! :? and if i'm lucky a "dun-know mate" comment.

any thoughts?

My Bro had the 130BHP T5 from new up until about 60k and it never missed a beat. He had that chipped to about 175BHP and it did improve fule economy when driven "normally" but when you let rip it did suffer. Boy that thing was fast though - unleaden it used to kill my BMW 325i!

i did actually look at a 174bhp model but the seller/dealer was a complete ladies undercarriage if you catch my drift and i decided i simply that i didn't want to give this guy any money.

as far as the chipping goes i have read loads over the last few days from specialist websites to comments on forums from people who have had it done, the worst said seems to be if you're heavy footed you lose mpg but if you drive normal it's better mpg on motorways, normal for the rest and a bit more powerful but not immensly.

@taffy, that link goes to the forum front page not a thread, what was the thread saying? my mate (who works for a bmw specialist has an t plate audi 1.6i petrol and said his chipping made quite alot of difference)

hmm arent van engines vastly different in their torque curves? my tranny only has 85bhp but zipps along quite nicely.
