VW T5 INFO NEEDED/BOUGHT IT!

update,

went to look at a van today, will be test driving tomorrow. it is the 1.9tdi 84 bhp, so less powerful by miles but the van centre i'm going to says they use a company to have the vans chipped so they have 110-115 bhp, this upgrade apparently gives better fuel economy and more power. what i never understand about chipping though is if it's that much better to have the engine mapped like that then why is it not done by VW?

when i ask this question the most common answer is a shrug of the shoulders! :? and if i'm lucky a "dun-know mate" comment.

any thoughts? :)

usually because they wont pass homologation with different mapping
you do get different ratings of the same engine just with various tweeks
mapping being one of them
different rated motors for different insurance groups maybe ?
a lot of firms restrict vans to 70 or even 56 this can also be done thru
re-mapping

"homologation" sorry what does that mean? i am dumb remember!!

Homologation is a technical term, derived from the Greek homologeo (ὁμολογέω) for "to agree", which is generally used in English to signify the granting of approval by an official authority. This may be a court of law, a government department, or an academic or professional body, any of which would normally work from a set of strict rules or standards to determine whether such approval should be given. The word may be considered very roughly synonymous with accreditation, and in fact in French may be used with regard to academic degrees (see apostille). Certified is another possible synonym, while to homologate is the infinitive verb form.

it wont get signed off by da man ,basically

vehicles and most other stuff has to pass quite stringent regulations
before us muggles are entrusted with them
even bicycles need type approval or homologation or B/S ,SVA,or whatever
applies to what you buy
so they drive a sample van up and down the proving facility track
whilst recording various data
if it fails it's no use ,this can be road noise at set speeds ,emissions at set
speeds/throttle settings ,even the ability for a vehicles colour to distract you
as someone once said homologation is another word for overregulation

anyway

84 bhp in a van? That doesn't seem a lot. My Dad gets 35mpg out of his LT35 long-wheelbase, high top with the 2.5 5 cylinder, which is pretty amazing really. I'd say a smaller van with the same engine should be pretty good.

Is the 1.9 TDi the same as they put in VW cars?

as far as i am aware the engine this has is the same as the 1.9 in their cars.

the fuel figures look ok, and the remap (to 110-115bhp)should make it better on both mpg and power, also i found out i can get a decat pipe fitted (legally) which should give 4-6 more mpg and causes less stress to the turbo.

i'm currently running a 1.4i honda civic which has 87bhp, this isn't slow and only struggles on hills when fully loaded etc so i'm thinking that if the van being a bigger vehicle is mapped to 110ish with the kit the honda usually has to carry should be fine.

testdrive will commence in about 2 hours. i'll find out then

went out for a spin in it. me, my dad and fred the sales guy, went straight on to the motorway and headed for the nearest hill that i know what my car goes like on and i have to say it felt only very slightly slower.

fred was very old skool, said he was 62 and the owner of the business, been there 20 odd years, seemed very genuine and helpful.

basically for those who know it, the m27 going in the bournemouth/ringwood direction from southampton, the motorway turns into a dual carriage way after junction 1 and there is a relatively steep hill with no run up that my car slows on, especially if i have bikes/people in the car, the van slowed but not badly and that was keeping it in 5th all the way up when we hit it at 60mph.

there were a couple of marks on it but he has agreed to sort out all the marks i noticed, one small dint on the passenger side front wing near the bumper, 2 scatches on the passenger side, and 1 where the door closes onto the roof at the back, and some marks on the footplate on the side door, also i am paying a little extra to have the bumpers painted to match as he's doing the other bits i thought it was worth asking.

it will come serviced/new mot/and cam belt done.

he also chucked in a 1 year gaurrantee, covering gearbox/clutch/engine/waterpump and other major mechanicals

in total he knocked off £800 off the window price, but it already had 500 off it as they were having a general sale so i gained another 300 giving a total of 800 off, then it went up a little bit as i asked for the bumpers to be colour coded.

it's an 06 plate with 1.9 tdi 84bhp but the chip will be upgraded to 110bhp. so when i get it it should go a little better, considering i was happy with how it drove as standard i'm sure it will be fine once chipped.

i'm a little shell shocked at the mo as i have never spent this sort of money on anything before! but i can't wait to get it, i'll post pics when i get it which should be towards then end of the month. fred guessed about a week or so to sort the things i wanted doing so i said i'd collect it after my next pay day on the 25th as i'm in no desperate rush.

while writing this, fred phoned up to confirm a couple of details and said thanks for buying it, said it was nice to deal with a family as opposed to workmen/business guys.

woo hoo!! :D i own a van!! :D

84bhp? You sure its got a turbo?

the 1.9TDI PD engine came with 130 bhp and something like 294 foot pound of torque and is what Fabia VRS owners use to destroy their clutches.
