Vitus 992 headset - is it just a regular integrated headset?

Hello everyone,

I've been curious about the 992 headset for a while, but I don't seem to be able to find exact info about it.
It certainly looks different than a classic threaded headset, but is the whole difference just in the fact that it uses roller bearings?

Cheers

it was made by mavic especially for the Vitus 992 i think , so its not compatible with anything else

They are effectively an integrated version of the Mavic headsets of the time, 305, 317 etc.

This shows the assembly with topcap removed. There are machined race pieces that press into the Vitus headtube casting, taking the place of the usual upper and lower cups.

After the ball retainer is fitted the topcap threads on, clamps everything down and the small allen bolt tightens the slotted section of the thread against the steerer, meaning no locknut is needed.

As latman says, only compatible with the 992 or any frames that shared the same lug castings..

Thank you guys.
This explains why on eBay there is a frame (without fork nor headset) that is selling for very cheap...

Haha yeah don't do it! Maybe if you had a Mavic headset you could cannibalize AND a fork.. but you might as well buy a decent frame and fork together then. £225-£300 tops is a fair price for a good condition 992 frameset imo. Beautifully riding frame too, I love mine.
