vehicles BITD

First car I remember was a Ford Corsair 2.0 E my father had, then briefly an Austin 1100 but memories are split screen vee dubs used to scare the hell out of me as a child, I remember it had eyes and a face that stared. My first car was a 1955 86 inch wheelbase Land-Rover and it had trafficators, that machine taught me mechanics and two types of welding, powered by a 1997 cc side valve, the engine was shot, but I fitted a similar motor out of a Rover P4 60, but soon realised I should have gone with a V8, the economy might have been better.

Lying in a puddle, trying to smack the petrol pump on my MGB with a brick.

Watching my dad stuff an Alfetta with newspaper and filler to sell it(one of my earliest memories).

That sort of oily smell that old cars have.

Modern cars are boring. I have a little campervan now, though, which although not old is at least old-fashioned. Here it is being brought back to life:

That's great mate.

My first car was a VW Golf, and it was the biggest piece of junk you can imagine.

I would sit in it though, and look at the green light of the radio, and feel wonderful, as though life couldn't get any better.

I spent over a grand doing it up more than once, with new engines, and spray jobs, before eventually putting it back in to the scrap heap where it belonged.

Worst car ever, but it was a lesson that served me well.

Capris Capris Capris, my whole life bar one daliance with a Cortina has had a Capri in it, well up till a few years ago when I sold my 280 :( . I'm now moderned up, tellingly I could tell you all my old registration plates but would struggle with the two cars I currently own.

1st car was a £100 Mini pick-up - 'JUD 32K'

5x series 1 SD1

1x series 2 SD1

1x 2 door Range Rover

2x Nissan Sunny 1.8 ZX 16v

1x Nissian Silvia 2.0 16v (very rare!)

2x Nissan Silvia 1.8 Turbo

1x Mercedes 560 SEL

1x Mercedes 500 SEC AMG

1x Mercedes 560 SEC

1x Isuzu 2.8 double cab

1x Mazda 323 (1986)

1x Subaru Legacy

1x Discovery V8

1x Jeep Wagoneer 5.7 V8 (1979)

1x MR2

Add a couple of early Mondeos and none of my cars have been newer than 10 years old, the most expensive being the Discovery at £2795 in 2001. I found later cars characterless and a bit dull. Fine if they have to earn you a living but not much beyond that.

Current squeeze is another Mercedes - a 500 SEL from 1987 bought for three figures, full service history from new and worth every penny.

I'd be happy with just driving late 70's into the 1980's cars. They were a bit safer, a bit more economical (coming out of the 1970's oil crisis) and put together quite well. But no more British cars. I just couldnt stand having important bits in my hand when they should be attached to the car!

First car I bought was a 67 mustang, cost £400, I didn't drive a cra when I bought it. I swapped the mustang for a 68 charger and had that when I took my test.

I was mechaniking for a bloke who raced an alfa, I went to the track in my charger and half way there the gearbox extension broke, so the charger went on the transporter and the race car was driven behind it;-)

The charger came with a shagged 383 motor, so I bought a £100 440 jensen intercepetor took the motor out and scrapped the rest!

A Charger as a first car

Funny though, i sold a 1970 Mach1 Mustang Shaker to fund my Charger, TBH i'd wished i'd kept the Stang as the Charger was too frigging big

After the Charger had this 3.0S Capri for a while.

Best Mini i had (out of six) was this 72 MK3, ended up with a 1380 Swifttune motor, kept it standard inside including the slidey Vinyl seats and the big spindly steering wheel.
