V brake power modulator

I visited my son in the US this week and his Cannondale bike was fitted with this device, has anyone use these before? What exactly do they do? IMG_3993.webp

The power modulator was normally fitted to low/mid range urban bikes.

It attempts to reduce the number of novices that fly over the handlebars, by simply reducing maximum cable tension, and in turn maximum braking🙄

Nobody ever liked them,
and now they are gone.
Good riddance.

from memory the cable pivot had a spring that gave a bit as you pulled the cable, you could compress the spring to make it more or less springy. (sorry, technical words aren't wording today). so some of the force you applied to the brake would be wasted on squishing the spring till finally the spring bottomed out and you finally got some braking.

all very pointless to be honest.

I can just imagine the conversation... 'I have a cunning plan, Blackadder.'

'Yes, Baldric, that's right: cyclists who go over the handlebars can probably sue but if, due to our most cunningly ineffectual braking, they have a fatal collision, they cannot.'

"These brakes are better than the old ones!"

"Great.
Oh hold on, what if someone crashes because they are too powerful?"

"Simple.
We add this device to reduce braking power to what it was previously."

"Genius."
