V brake boots/accordions

Where do i get accordions for v brakes?

Found some on ebay but the joker wants 5.50 for a pair posted!

LBS for this one, or is there somewhere online at a sensible price?

I've been taking a stanley knife to mine for years!! I didn't realise thet folk actually used these (other than bike shops setting up new bikes).

I've always treated them the same way as reflectors etc: straight in the bucket.

A mate of mine is under the illusion he needs them, he is in a very dusty country (eritrea) so maybe he has more need of them than we do.

The idea is that they help prevent dirt entering the noodle, whether they actually do that is debatable

I've found the best ones to be the ones that come with Avids - they're not long and concertina'd, they're more like the little gaiters that come on newer XT rear mechs: one big diameter, one small diameter, kind of a cone inbetween, thus:

They do the job as good as any of keeping the crap out of the noodle. That is, none of them do it wonderfully...

I've found with some of the long concertina ones that the rubber hardens over time. So after a year the cables may still be running smoothly but the brake feels stiff and unresponsive. It's because the hardened rubber is preventing the brake arms being squeezed together.

I've just stripped some cheap Tektro V's off a mates frame and refitted some LX canti's. You can have the novelty condomy things from those if you still want some.

I can't see how they keep the crud out: surely they act as bellows and cause suction at the top end for the noodle, drawing water in?? (Assuming the rubber bit touches the other brake. Am I right in thinking that if you use them you should set it up loke this? ie they act as a spacer to indicate optimum gap between arms. Mind you, I can't see how this works either, given that frame differ so much.

Bucket. Much simpler!

Gore Ride-on Cable systems make an improvement to the stock rubber thing...also work well with the Avid rollamajig for v-brakes...I'll take a pic of my setup and post later.
