US small item tariffs.

On August 29 a US tariff exclusion on items under $800 was eliminated. Items arriving after that time will be subject to the various tariffs in effect. This has created chaos for shippers.
Many nations have suspended postal package shipment to the US.

According to AnPost (Ireland), they're still shipping, but packages are being held for 5 days pending payment from the recipient.

It's really more than the de-minimus exemption going away -- the tariffs need to be paid prior to entering the US, rather than while clearing US customs. Most postal orgs don't have the procedures in place for this.

  • The recipient customer in the USA must pay the taxes before the item can be delivered.
  • An Post now asks that for these items, the recipient email is provided as a mandatory field.
  • An Post International Logistics Partner will contact the USA recipient and request payment of taxes, along with an administration fee.
  • A time frame of 5 calendar days applies for the customer to pay.
  • Once paid, the eCommerce parcel will be delivered to the USA.
  • If not paid, the item will be returned to the sending customer.
  • No credit will be due to the sending customer in this instance.

I'm probably shooting fish in a barrel here, but I think this is going to lead to a huge increase in phishing sms/emails.

I have a package I ordered August 4. It's in transit now. It's from China. Maybe I already paid it? I think the tariff exemption was already gone for China.
I have no idea what's going to happen now. No one in the US is bothering to offer 26" Carbon rims anymore. Much less the 24 spoke ones I needed.
