So if you ship something from the UK to another country does the UK charge a VAT (Value added tax) on departure regardless of the country of origin? If so does anybody know the rate that bikes are taxed at? What if it's a gift? Any and all wisdom you can share would be greatly appreciated.

The UK only charges for stuff coming into. Doesn't matter why its coming in. Over £50 and pay VAT plus post office fees.
Its cheaper to send to EU countries

This is from the post office web site

Letters from 48p Europe delivery times 3-5 days
World zone 1/2 from £1.54

Small Packets
Europe £1.19
World Zone 1/2 from £1.58

Their is also 'Airsure' from £4.20 with tracking 2-4 days

And good ol Surface from 46p 2-12 weeks

The delivery times doesn't included the countries post service. Its only the time it takes to get to that country from the UK.

Airsure's a joke. It's only trackable to the edge of Britain. Once abroad, no tracking. What use is that?!

airsure prices are on top of the standard postage as well.... do you get a signature/ delivery confirmation with Airsure?

If the seller is a business and vat registered they might need to add vat which you can either claim back or fill out a vat exempt form...don't ask how.
It what holiday makers can do here when they buy tat to take home. If they don't regualrly make sales outside EU they might just add VAT to protect them selves form the VAT man... as bad as your IRS.
