Can anyone tell me what the clearance is like on U brakes, looking for a comfy tyre size? Any u brake tips at all in fact as I've never had one? Its an XT one if thats any help.

I've got a DX U-brake on an old GT and the 2" tyre is fine and a 2.1" would probably be OK too. Anything larger may be pushing it though if the bike is only used in the dry you may get away with it.

I am running 2.1's with an XT u brake, they are ok. I have only experienced light mud so far though  I'd say dont go anymore than 2.1, I may drop to 1.95 soon.

I run a 1.95 rear with my XT on the xizang with about 90mm spacing on the mounts, gives about 5-7 mil clearance between the fatest part of the brakes (the bushes) and widest part of the tyre (outermost nobbly bits).

I think ubrake mounts can be up to 95 mm apart - I'm slightly less thanhalf way on the eccentric setting of my XT booster.

I recall running 2.1 hardpacks on my rockhopper with its under slung ubrake.

Begs the question kaiser,

What have you got that needs U-brakes ?

Your going to start a museum of beautiful old bikes soon !!!!!!!

Seen that myself, dismissed it due to it being too small !

Almost dismissed it myself as being to big, but it grew on me so checked the top tube length and its cool  exact same as my 16" stumpie and 18" GT.

Go U brake. Glad someone good got the KHS, very intriguing frame - caught my eye as being potentially quite a light one.

I've run a bunch of different knobblies with the ubrake but never bigger than 2.1. Sometimes you have to wiggle the wheel to get them through but no real dramas, and the clean lines make up for it.

:D
