one feels as though the rubber is going hard feels smooth and shiny rather than rubbery - is it on its way out or is it still okay??? doest look to be perishing
You could try it and just keep an eye on it, obviously if cracks appear after a few rides its toast.
Tyres do have a shelf life, read in a motorbike mag recently a figure of five years, regardless of what the tyre looks like, not sure if that could apply to mountain bike tyres (should imagine there'd be quite a few on here with tyres over five years old ), i think it depends a lot on how the tyre has been stored and used in that time.
Actually the older they get the better they are. A long time ago tyres were left to hang for several years. This is because the vulcanising reaction continues for some time.
Many pro teams store tyres for some years before using. Saw a piece on it in this year's TdF coverage.
I am just running some original amberwall Panaracers and they are a lot harder wearing than the original ones/
Got a stash of tubs in the back of me garage ageing ready for next season, they've been there 2 years. Its supposed to make them more supple, here's hoping.
