I am looking for a new TV.
Mine is now 4 years old and if i look at the current screens , these are much sharper and faster.

Any tips?

req. specs: No plasma, at least 50" (that's what i have right now and i don't want to go any smaller)

Plasma TVs have better contrast than LCD, if you want LCD look for the highest contrast ratio.

LCD tend to use more power

LCD tend to also eat their own PSU (Phillips and LG)

Pioneer and Panasonic are just about the best brand leaders

3D TV and OLED TV is just around the corner.

Thats off the top of my head and now maybe old news but I used to work in the industry where good panel displays were important.

My own low res plasma is rounding its 5th year and shows no signs of giving up or being unable to cope with higher resolution/ quality pictures.

Try to avoid built in Freeview tuners if you can, they are not very good (for the UK anyway).

i have a plasma now: Thomson 50"
I thought that plasma was asking more power then LCD?

i might me interested in buying LED
Anyone got an big LED screen?

The Freeview built in to Panasonic LCD (37") is much better than my boxes or even computer one. The Freesat is a bonus as well but err not got a dish up yet.

but I guess if your already replacing a 50" screen then you're in a completely different league to me.
Though if I was to go larger (larger than my rooms at 50") I look at Panasonic's top end Plasma over the LCD personally.

But each to their own and 3D is here if it floats your boat

should be available now if not by the end of the week.

yes as lgf said oled. so maybe look into getting a new led tv? although its not been in the market long so problems wont have arisen as yet, maybe worth a wait for them.
from what i can gather you need a tv with a good refresh rate or else you get a slight ghost, i seem to have magic eyes 'look at my new tv' - 'yeah but its still a bit ghosty!' - 'i cant see it' - 'well i can'

I was looking at some Loewe stuff the other day, and their 52" screen was a bit nice.

High-end budgets only though

As has already been said, if you're sticking high-street brands, you won't go wrong with Panasonic or Pioneer....

I always thought Plasmas used more power too, they produce more heat and have all those cooling fans :?

I think Plasmas are better for standard definition and LCDs better for HD (in general), that's what Richer Sounds in Chester told us anyway.

Thats what I've got, 37" Panasonic. Freeview works fine, better than the old box we sold when we upgraded.

Having built in Freesat is even better, and a bonus being the previous owners of our house left their old dish up so we just had it recabled and away we go! 8)

Plasmas use more power than LCD when doing light pictures and historically they always used more due to the tech.
This maybe 3 years old but it show the figures:
http://reviews.cnet.com/green-tech/tv-consumption-chart/?tag=arw
LED lit LCD's such as the Samsungs offer lower consumption as well as a truer picture colour and better contrast than conventional LCD's. They are now easily comparable with plasmas in these areas. The one area that Plasma has never been able to compete with LCD in is definition.

So currently if you want the best in 50" or larger a Series 7 Samsung is the way to go. Until OLED or 3D comes along in the mainstream, but I reckon you will be safe for at least 5 years.
