Tube choice??

I'm taking the plunge on a bespoke steel frame, I'm used to Columbus SL which I love and had a great 531C Road Ace , which was superb.
I'm not racing, or touring, so no need for panniers etc, just a nice fast cruiser for long rides.

Any recommendations on modern tubesets?

Reynolds 953 stainless steel ?

There was a really nice "Feather" bike on here a few months ago..can't remember what that was made of though

you can't beat good old reynolds 753R - if you can still find someone with a set, that is!!

I'd go with what your custom builder recommends. They have most experience of what keeps their customers happy!

i would happily build it - we used to do that kind of thing in our sleep!

you can't beat good old reynolds 753R - if you can still find someone with a set, that is!!

I have a retired framebuilder friend with unused sets of 753R.

However as an all purpose frameset I'd not recommend it.

Nothing wrong with good old 531 or one of the newer tubesets - depends how deep your pockets are - 631 or 853 for example - from a top builder these are going to be £750 + if cheaper I'd be sceptical.

Given what you would be using it for, I suggest 531 would be more than adequate for your needs.

In a blind taste test of all these tubesets you probably wouldn't tell the difference anyway.

And never mind the other tubesets - can your budget go up to a £1000.00 for 853?

Otherwise it's"academic".
