Trying to understand shimano range

In my day it was 200GS <Exage 300LX <Exage 400LX <Exage 500LX <Deore LX <Deore DX <Deore XT and then XTR came in at the top (and 100GS at the bottom).

Then they went all namey with Alivio, Acera and STX and I lost track and interest.

DITTO!!
Couldn't have put it better myself!

WOW, quite a mixture there guys, no wonder I was confused :?
The reason I was asking was that I just bought a few old skool complete wheels & was wondering what ones were the best of the bunch. I got a matching set of Araya TM18s with STX hubs & a rear Wolber AT18 with a FH HG50 hub (Exage???) + 7 speed cassette , + a nearly new 700x40 tyre (for a mate), all for £15 :D
Shame the guy didnt have a matching Wolber front

Thanks for the replies anyways & did I get a good deal?? 8)

so where does plain deore fit, eg is it mt60 late 80s stuff?, and mountain LX? are they the same or different that the 200lx 400 lx etc

plain deore thumb shifters seems to be around late 80s to mid 90s,

then plain deore seemed to disappear for a while, only to re-emerge mid-late 90s as the level below lx.

in fact was there ever a time stx and deore existed together? are they one and the same qulity wise?

but a bargain for £15

LX m560ish was my staple throughout the 90's , XT and XTR were the stuff of dreams as a boy

it really is quite confusing when you think about it, but when you dont it isnt

I've absolutely no idea was any of the M737 etc etc numbers mean
 Is it the higher the number, the better??

all i know is that M5** is LX e.g M563
M7** is XT E.G m737
and XTR is M9** eg M950.

they come as groupsets with all parts sharing the the first letter and two digits at least, they continue to this day

modern XT is currently M77* for example

all shimano parts have them and by googling the numbers you will find the groupset and era

I remember the thumbies (think I had them on my Clockwork- either them or DX) but don't remember anything else (mechs etc). Seen Mountain LX on here but assumed it was just prior to the ones I listed, so late 80s.
