Not at all, unless you were claiming to be building a period correct rig I don't think anyone can or would flame you for using V Brakes.

They only post date your bike by about 5 years after all.

I have some XT738 /9 bits spare and acording to MOMBAT 738 V,s were around in 1996 so only a year out lol
Not that its ever really bothered me tbh , i never owned stock bikes in the 90,s so wont be starting now !
