Troubled Trek

Ok i seem to have done it again  another old nail from Gumtree !

I saw this Trek 8700 just around the corner for a mere £30 , despite the single very poor picture i thought it must be worth a look .

Anyway i ended up buying it ( i was never not going to in reality )
so here we go , nothing left of the original bike except the frame and forks , lots of bubbling paint and missing clear coat on the carbon but it seems sound and came apart ok and seems a pretty light frame .

running gear is a mismatch of modern stuff , seems to have a nice cane creek headset and the wheels , although not matching seem ok :D
a rear XT 737 hub on a sup 117 cd ceramic with alloy nips and another XT 737 front hub on a 517 so not bad .
Here are a few quick pics from the phone :D

I would be interested in your views , i have never even ridden a Trek !

Re:

To be honest I think Trek are a very underrated brand, at least the earlier version,
Before they bought Klien they made great leaps with technological innovations for the common man to enjoy, sure others did likewise but usually at a lot higher price point. The Bonded Aluminium frame I have still looks cool even today, and Carbon for the mass market was also ahead of its time.

I think you should just build it, ride it and enjoy it for what it is a pre Klien Trek from an era when they made world class bikes that magazines would produce poster of Treks, and you'd hang them on the wall and marvel at the carbon or Aluminium.

What size is ?

Re:

I agree with Spud, very under rated brand IMO.

Had an Easton Program aluminium Trek once, an 8 or 9 something ZX, was so light weight and really pretty, but unfortunately too big for me. Would have another one in a heart beat if it was as cheap as yours and my size! 8)

Re:

No more!!

Can't afford to build up the one I have now, selling not buying is the order of the day

Good luck with the build, just ride it and see what you think, bound to be lovely.

Re:

Hi mate,

I quite like the bare carbon, is that wrong ?

Should be easy to respray the burgundy bits, should you build it, ride and enjoy it!
Could even go for the colour we mentioned in the week! Maybe
