My Trek is relisted on E-bay as the previous highest bidder struggled with the concept of payment.

It's here:

This is 1998 model. That was the first production year of the SID and all those graphics and Cane Creek WAM wheels match. 1997 was black and yellow. 1996 was plain black, as far as I can remember. Both had Judy SL's on board.

You are partly right, the first year of the SID was indeed 1998, but the Trek 9900 from 1998 was purple and yellow with a-symetric painting.

That makes this bike a 1999 model instead of 1996/1997.

This could be a midseason model that comes with a SID as an upgrade, but, as it is comes with XTR M950 (8 speed), it is 100% from 1998. 1999 was with 9 speed M952 XTR all the way and the SID had different stickers. I also makes no point to sell your flagship model with last year's grouppo and fork. ;)

I AM right, because that IS an 8 speed crankset and what looks like an 8 speed rear derailleur. The 9-speed cranks (M952) had chainrings with more shaved of material (a.k.a. holes) and the 9-speed rear derailleur had that rubber boot as a seal for the housing/cable. Also, there was Mega-9 branding all over the place and I have seen none. To me it is clear this is 1998 model, maybe a midseason model. The seller claims it is 9-speed, but he doesn't seem to know the precise year of the bike either. And it's not like the XTR groupsets ever had clear indications on the shifters regarding how many gears you're sporting. ;) If it is indeed 9-speed, then the seller must've upgraded the bike later with just a rear shifter, a chain and a cogset, but this makes no sense, as he said he didn't use the bike much for the last couple of years.

Oh, I checked the ad again and there is a picture of the cogset. Please count them too! ;) It is petty cllear to me, just as stated above.

Re:

Whatever it is, I like it. Shame I'm skint at the moment. Definitely gonna have to get another OCLV mountain bike at some point soon.
