Trail maintainance

Many many years ago I built the local bmx trails, visited others and built the KOD jumps at races etc. always had a shovel in the car and loved the building and tweeting of runs etc.

Move on 10-15 years and I've noticed the local mtb trails are looking very sorry for themselves. I really want to get back into looking after the trails and a group of us are planning doing some minor and major trail repairs over winter, so.............

Who else here has, does or needs to get digging, raking and sawing? Picks would be cool, I am aware of many dig days organised by riders and presume some of them may be lurking here ;)

Or do you think sod it and leave it to others? I am aware some riders, mainly modern newbies only ride trail centres and think they're car park charges eliminate their requirement to help out!!

Sounds like a long way to get to trails. Mine are even closer and i still spend a couple of days in the spring wandering along the nearest ones with a chainsaw and shovel. And even hammer and nails to shore up some of the more heavily used ones.........

Re:

Wur trail runs through our sitting room and downstairs loo. Beat that!

I started maintaining trails in the 70s, my dad insisted on us repairing any damage to the parts of moor we ran our scramblers over. Taught us at an early age to appreciate the environment. Everyone used to throw in repairing all the peat tracks each year too, great community building.

I can still easily find repairs we made on trails at Dunnet Head, on my rare visits.

LOL the definitive map has a trail running along the top of the ridge then down the hill, the trail is what defines the back and side of our "garden".

I say garden, most of it is forest and bloody great lumps of granite......... not managed to find anything you'd call a trail either..........

So I have to nip over the road and pick up the trail in our neighbours garden.

We built a nice little trail when we were kids, motocross bikes keep sneaking on. They make it a bit boggy but no need to maintain it.

Re:

We have some builders around here, some do them nicely. Some build them for themselves with jumps and whatnot and so rendering them unusbke by the majority of riders.
So we there are now trail un-builders.

Get them done but don't forget about all the riders.
Never built myself as I like the natural stuff.
