Well I did it all 245km on a early ninties Pinerrello Monvisio kitted out with period equipment apart from the saddle I need one that fits and that is not a period one.

Anyway the day was run well with the dutch police doing traffic duties and ensuring riders used the cycle lanes. The first 60 miles were easy rolling at the head of a group for a while and then scooting of but that was a mistake because the hills started and my they just kept on coming. By the time 90 miles came up the first big climbs appeared and then Koppenberg. I ground to halt when the gradient went past 20% it turns out rather predictably that 39:25 is not a good ratio for this hill given it is on cobbles. Still that is the only hill I had to dismount on. However I could barley walk up it either as I kept slipping on my cleat. I did think about crawling. When the gradient fell to a mere 10% or so a friendly flandrian gave me a push start to get going again. Also Pave at speed is horrible you can't change gear, my hands wanted to jump of the hoods and the only place I could put them was on the drops. The worst bit though were the downhill pave sections with a cobbled bend at the bottom, "braking" for that was entertaining. There are Pave sections that went on for over 2km I just wanted those to end. The final hill Paterberg looked like a vertical cobbled wall and it seemed most people were walking up it I managed to get up it but given the 20% gradient my speed was 3 mph is places!

If anyone has not done it, do it its worth the effort. Next year though I will try wider tubs on the rear wheel and lower gearing (I will get round to it this time!)

Overall time 9hrs5 mins which is not too shabby especially as I have never cycled that far before never ridden cobbles and never gone up a 20% climb either. So a lot of firsts that day.

16000 friendly riders from all over europe will always make a nice day. Also the flanders folk seem up for it with one family appearing on the devils worst climb. Is there a word for people who like to watch others suffer because that what they were doing and they enjoyed it! Also the Belgian drivers were very well behaved did not see a single aggressive driver the whole day same they are not so well behaved on the motorway.

Well done !

I did the last 100k one year , when it went up the Mur and Bosberg . Maybe I'll do the whole thing next year . Lucky for both of us it was dry . And what a fantastic race too , despite the absence of the aforementioned climbs.

A 7402 rear mech won't take a 29T! A 12-27T miche 8 speed cassette will fit just just need to order one. Got a whole year now.

Re:

Would a smaller little ring work ? Or would it be to big a jump to a 53 big one for the front mech to cope with ?

Last time I rode this I wore MTB shoes and pedals - just as well, as someone decided to drive their Merc up the Koppenberg at the same time. The volume of bikes forced him to stop and he burnt-out his clutch trying to hill-start on wet, muddy cobbles! One year we got lost heading out to DePanne and finished riding over 300km in under 10 hours - I was fooked!

38T is the smallest you can go on a 130BCD chainset and I am not swapping this lovely Dura ace chainset for a compact. 38/53 is technically out of the front mech capacity and will mean the 12-27T I would prefer to run will not work either with the rear mech. So no go on the smaller front ring also it will barley make any difference.

There were so many riders out this time and so many marshels you could not get lost even if you paid no attention to the signs. This is something they may have improved since you last went.

Top stuff!

I'm pretty sure that a 7402 will take a 28t and 39x28 works with a Dura Ace 7402 on my Panasonic. Admittedly it was cold comfort on the Koppenberg when I rode into the back of a rider who decided to dismount but it did let me grind up the Paterberg.

Toe clips and straps on the Koppenberg provide an interesting dilemma - haul on the straps so you don't pull your foot out or leave a bit of slack for the inevitable dab? Add in wooden soled shoes letting you wrap your foot around the pedal and it's certainly fun.

Re:

I solved the peddle issue by using the period correct PD-7401 clipless jobs. Good to know the 7402 mech will take a 28T sprocket. I had assumed it would't as it was a bit far out of the offical spec. I'll give a 12-27T a go I think and the gaps will be smaller and I got up Paternberg on 39-25T just.
Jsut need to wear out the cassette first though.
