Probably a dumb question, but are the thumbies the 7 speed with the equivalent xt secret 8th?

Yes, the thumbshifters are 8 speed. I prefer them to XT and find they work well with XTR

Just a double check. The shifters will work on both 7and 8 speed? If yes, I'll take them. Out of interest, I read somewhere that the suntour shifters pull a slightly different amount of cable and/or the cassette spacing and rear mech are slightly different? Don't suppose you happen to know if this is the case, as I've a few xt 8 speed cassettes and would prefer to use what I have with an xc pro rear mech and shifers (that is if it is possible to run a 8 speed cassette on xc pro hubs?)

Yes they work on both 7 & 8 speed cassettes. I use them on all my bikes, the orange prestige has an 8sp Suntour cassette on XC Pro hubs and the Explosifs have 8sp XTR on CrossMax and White Industries.
For Suntour I use index and the XTR I use friction as yes the gear ratios are slightly different.
