p.s. brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Good evening,

Thanks excel, I had seen that but wondered if there was a cheaper version.

Re the BB fixed cup removal tool, I have not been lazy by letting someone else do the work, I have to presume that this is the right one. Any confirmation would be appreciated,

Just to clarify, (someone correct me if I am wrong) when you got a set of these 30+ years back, from any manufacturer, you did it on the understanding that they would fit just about any good quality headset, BB, pedals that you might conceivably wish to install on your bike- Stronglight, T.A., Campag. & copies thereof, Shimano, Suntour...

36mm fixed cup....15mm pedal
32mm headset......BB lockring
32mm headset......adjustable BB cup, pegs 30mm between centres.

..Then they started monkeying about...

If you need a rough'n' ready bearing gauge, you could improvise with one of those stands/boxes for metal twist drill bits, which always feature a graduated collection of little holes, often with the size of the hole conveniently marked, in metric or imperial..

Thanks - yet again (why am i always thanking everyone?) << I know the answer and a lot of people are owed a beer (or similar non-alcoholic drink).

Mr Torque, Park Tools have a similar tool - but it is £8 ish and i thought there would be a super-cheap version. Maybe I am being cheap!! (probably) Halfords have it and i am awaiting a voucher for my birthday - so Park Tools will probably get the custom.

SSwinton - have you used that on a DA 7400? I did look at it but I am confused as to how it works. Could you provide some detail please.

Thanks all - beers are lined up in Ballymena for you!!

Richard

p.s. I have a good selection of whiskeys - if that suits your needs!!

I've not used it on a 7400 as I don't currently have one. However as a bike shop mechanic I used the similar design Campagnolo tool to fit/remove all fixed cups of this design. The tool sits flat against the outer surface of the cup and is held there by the long bolt passing through the bottom bracket shell to the inner surface of the cup. There are some pictures of it in action here:

Never knew such a tool existed, it certainly looks a safer option than a spanner as it won't be able to slip off once it is bolted on. My only concern would be that you would not get the same leverage on it if the cup was seized but there is a possible way round that by removing the original handle/pin and using a longer pin (screwdriver) for the extra leverage required
