tool kits

Well, over 20 years of maintaining my bikes I've never worn out or broken a tool from Park, Bahco, Irwin, Cyclo or Stanley.

I have rounded off or snapped cheap Draper / market stall spanners and Allen keys.

Recently bought 4 very similar toolkits from Lidl for £25 each.

I then sold 3 on eBay for £59 each.

Kerching!

top work fella. I like your mercenary cashing in style. 8)

you don't see workmen with crap tools, they'd be out of a job.

Sorry but people say this all the time and it's silly. Yes there are people who can justify spending a lot of money and buying the best quality tools because they use them ALL DAY EVERY DAY and will therefore achieve some value out of it.

On the other hand there are people who might use their tools once a month or once every 6 months for a couple of hours to do small jobs they feel comfortable with, these people will never get the value out of buying top of the range tools.

I do think that it is worth buying a degree of quality and building up a tool kit over time, but let's be realistic. If you have a good car boot locally, I would highly recommend going and seeing if you can't pick up second hand tools to get you going. Older tools were made to better standards (like just about every thing else) and you will be able to build up a good tool kit for not a lot of money.

how would you do this?
would you replace the park tool cone wrench with a regular tool produced by a solid brand, to reduce the cost?
and then to buy from park tool only the specialised bicycle tools?
i want to buy a kit fast, to use it a few times a year, when i make a conversion, clean some parts
i'm getting tired only when i think i have to configure a solid kit, i am not the most informed dude in the area of tools
would this spare my trouble?

spanners no, i only had some chinese made, bulky, but gave them to a friend.
screwdrivers from an ikea kit, they would do fine.
allen keys, as well, bulky and rounded, not so happy with them, also they are short so i won't be able to have a good control.

far now i was depending on this friend to help me build everything. i don't want to wait for him all the time, i watched enough to learn how to do my own jobs.

i just want some reliable tools to be independent in doing what i need, to learn to be more technical, by my own.
as any other specialised subject this century, you have to browse alot to get the best result. of course i want to pay some quality objects(but i don't want to pay marketing or something i won't get to use), i know you can have good results and learn easier to handle with good tools, so i would built a kit from scratch, so my kids from the future think they had a hard working father hehe.

for the moment i have this cbt italia i want to convert to a single speed
that involves chain whip, spanners for the hubs, crank removal tool, i think it's a square bb, for the chain i could use my crank brothers multitool, i think it isn't a tool for a frequent use.

any help from this point, so i use my money wisely?
thank you

Do you have any tools at the minute? Like a set of spanners and screwdrivers or anything? Allen keys?

In that case I think you may be best off buying a kit of some description, and then start building up tools around it. They seem to be popular so people must get on with them ok.
