To SPD or not SPD, that is the question....

get the SPD's you'll never look back.

OK, so we all forget the once. For me it was at a T junction.Forgeot I was clipped in,keeled over, still attached to teh bike.Only did it the once though.

I struggle to ride flat pedals now.You just can't pull up on them teh same.

I've got Shimano M520,540 and 970 SPD's and although the 970's are on teh Zaskar, the 520's are the best VFM and ain't that different to the 970 versions. So in short get the 520 for £20

I agree - one mistake and you'll never do it again.

Flat pedals seem weird once you get used to SPD's, completely inefficient and they scare me more!

plus -bunnyhops are just so damn easy in spuds! - they actually improved my technique on flats

Imagine Lance Armstrong riding Le Tour on flat pedals.... He would finish last in every race, anyone disagree?

Sorry to bring this back from the dead but saves me putting up a new thread. I am doing my best to get used to clipless pedals but am struggling. As a teen I thought of myself as a pretty advanced MTBer but was at home with toeclips, This was the early 90's so forgive me.

Fast forward to this year and with the D-Jab came a set of Crank Brothers Egg Beater clipless pedals. I rode to work & back on these for 3 weeks solid and using both normal and premium cleats, I just couldn't get on with them. Nowhere near as easy to get in to as I expected, the left feels noticably looser than the right which bothered me and just seemed to be a lot more hassle.

Had a 6 month cyclng break due to injury and fitted some toeclips to the D-Jab for the long distance road rides I started doing. Like meeting up with a long lost friend. Got the Raven and stuck the Egg Beaters on there. Went out yesterday on the Raven in the cold/snow and fell over 4 times if memory serves. Once in a hidden freezing bog lol and twice in uphill snow covered sandy tracks. On these 3 occasions I just couldn't disengage in time 1 occasion I rode over a big frozen puddle for a laugh, cracked through the ice abruptly as half expected and found that both shoes disengaged forwards out of the pedals!

Anyway, I want to believe that clipless are the way to go but the Egg Beaters are putting off clipless for life! Are SPD's that much better???? Thinking about getting some platform-style clipless but if Egg Beaters are as good as it gets then forget that!

Advice appreciated.

Cheers,

Nick :).

Never tried eggbeaters but my brother who does an awful lot of mountain biking swears by them.

I think SPD's are worth persevering with myself- I hate riding without them now!

Used Spd pedals now since the very first days they appeared on the market, and yes initially there were a few  accidents    , but these days I dont even think about clipping in or out, and if the tension is just right , there should be not problem getting your feet in and out.. :)

I have also tried the egg beater range of pedals too, from the triple Ti's to the candy's and TBH I think these are a far better pedal design for beginners to get in and out of , and they are generally lighter too than the shimano range..

The best thing about crank bros pedals over shimano is the amount of float available , if you have knee problems these are ace.. However I have found that the bearings and the seals are not as good as the shimano range of pedals.. so therefore I have gone totally back over to shimano..

I say persevere with which ever design you choose.. well worth it.. :)

I do have knee problems, that was actually the reason for 6 months off, besides having bad 'gravely' knees, a car turned across me on the bike last march and the Egg Beaters didn't disengage so I ended up 20 feet down the road still attached! Bad bucket handle meniscal tear that had folded over as well for good measure. Strangely, I could manage the pain running on it...... Had that cut out in early November and just getting back up to speed now.

Ok, I will give the Egg Beaters another try, but not this pair. Would I find it easier to engage if I went for platform ones like the Candy or Acids? If anyone has experience on which of those designs would be better and why that would great :).

Cheers,

Nick.

Nick stick with them. Without teaching you how to suck eggs did you read the fitting instructions? The cleats can be fitted 2 ways giving different float and release angles. The platform ones like candys or smarties are a wee bit easier to locate IMO . Falling off and not uncliping is just part of the process  much the same as rattling your shins with flatties is. In the end the extra control you have on the bike will outweigh the falling bit :)
