The bullet style dropouts came out in 1994. Same year as the switched to a different and lighter tubeset and introduced the "Mountain Shock Geometry". In 1994 they canceled the cantilever pipe too. The stamp on the BB shell should confirm this.

The BB shell is stamped with "Made in USA" and the serial number B19xxx, there is no date stamp and I have never seen a date stamp on any of the 4 other Hei Hei frames that have passed through my hands ranging from a 1991 to a 1998. Below is an extract from the 1993 USA version of the Kona catalogue clearly showing a frame with bullet dropouts and no cantilever bridge available in that model year!

This is quite interesting read.

Ive got a 1993 hei hei in 18" but mine is not suspension corrected. but a 63mm sus fork runs lovely.

My 1993 has bullet style drop puts aswell. and mine is defo 1993.

Interesting debate, probably not the best place to have it though i.e. on someone’s for sale thread … :?

Just an observation, the forks on the scan above ‘look’ longer than 395 (judging by the knobblie tyre to bottom cup clearance).

Having said that, the text does say “suspension or titanium fork options”, is it possible that both geometries were available for a ‘change over’ period ?

With regards frame features and age dating etc I have found out that my Airborne is a ‘hybrid’ of a model change – the early geometry but with the later frame features. Manufactures normally include a statement in their info about ‘continual development’ or similar to allow themselves some flexibility, maybe this is one of those scenarios ?

Thank you WD, finally some common sense! I also think your other comments make a lot of sense, 93 was probably the transition year between the older chunky dropouts and the bullet design.

Thanks Kase, your comments support my findings when I was trying to date the frame.

The frame is still available!

It's cropped up before and I think the findings where 3/4/5 where bullet drop out (forget the manufacturer) one of them 4 of 5 had a stumpy seattube ...

Guys, this is interesting discussion but better off in 'Retro Chat' or even via PM.

It's been noted before but please keep 'on topic' i.e. whether you want to buy mousemat's ti bits and bobs.
