Tiagra 4700 10 speed flat bar shift compatibility

Just a quick sanity check...

Modern stuff.....

Am I correct in thinking that tiagra 4700 10 speed flat bar shifters share the same pull ratio as 7/8/9 speed rear derailleurs in general and 10 speed road? I assume so, as are they not an option for flat bar bikes carrying road kit?

Or are they something completely else....like some durace?

If i could make any sense of shimano compatibility chart.....i would....but its basically incomprehensible to me!

Tiagra 4600 is backwards compatible with 789
4700 lever shares cable pull with 11 iirc, but the modern stuff is best well matched.

Does anybody have any experience of microshift sl t10 thumbies.

I tried some s.r. 9 speed ones ages ago and they were terrible! I assume the quality of the microshift is considerably better given the cost!

the later 10 speed cable pull will make the 10 feel better than the 9, but it's quite a lot to ask of a simple lever.

The Microsoft ones are early 10 road,so will be poor, due to short cable pull, and won't work with a 4700 mech, but v will with 4600.
Early 10 was worse than 9 due to less cable between gears.

Ok. Interesting. Thanks for the insight. I had heard that the 10 speed thumbies require huge thumbs to get the reach!

Thumbies worked well on 6 speed
Shimano left them at 8.

Interestingly, early derailleurs, operated by downtube levers, had the cable pull dictated by the diameter of the boss on the shift lever.

This led to the short cable pull all the way to 10speed in order to maintain backwards compatibility.

By then the shifting was so vague when a little worn and dirty, dynasys10 and road 11 stepped up the pull.

But a thumbshifter that could pull shimano 11x would need a very large base or internal gear.

It's probably twice the total pull of xt 7 speed

4700 Tiagra is the weird one when it comes to rear derailleur compatibility since although it's a 10-speed groupset, it has a different rear derailleur pull ratio to all the other 10-speed Shimano road groupsets (which were all the same through 8/9/10 speed and helpfully enough they were also compatible with Shimano MTB derailleurs up to 9-speed). But oh no, the 4700 uses the pull ratio from the 11-speed groupsets, so you'll need an 11-speed road rear derailleur - 5800, 6800, 7000, 8000, GRX etc. (Or the 4700 derailleur, of course)

Front mechs can only be similar era as there's different cable pulls and reach between road and mtb mechs and model years

I've used the dura ace 10spd bar end shifters (which are often used as thumbies) with MT60 mechs which are from the 1987 6spd model year
